This meeting will be on February 22, 2011, at 7pm, at the Keith McClarnon Government Center (Greenfield City Hall), in the Council Chambers, located at 10 S. State Street in Greenfield.

Eric most recently served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Governor Daniels, and also played key roles during Daniels' 2004 and 2008 campaigns, serving as his campaign manager in 2008.

Christmas Party - Sunday, December 12th

The Hancock County Republican Party Christmas Party is on Sunday, December 12, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, at the Creative Arts Center, located at 2 West Main, in Greenfield, and we hope that you can attend! We are looking forward to wonderful refreshments, a perfomance by the Brandywine Wind Jazz Band, and a visit from Santa!

As this event, we will be conducting a Silent Auction of donated baked/homemade goods as a fundraiser, and we would like to ask for your help. Would you be willing to donate at least one item for this event? Items donated last year included desserts, homemade salsa, homemade jam, a wine basket, etc. You may begin dropping your items off for the Silent Auction at 1pm at the Creative Arts Center before the party begins at 2pm. Please have your items there no later than 2pm if at all possible. If you are unable to attend the Christmas Party on December 12th, but would still like to donate homemade baked goods for the silent auction, please let me know and we will make arrangements to pick up those items prior to the party.

Also, as admission to the Christmas Party, we are asking that you bring a canned/boxed food item, or personal care items, such as paper towels, soap, laundry detergent, etc., or make a financial contribution, that will be donated to the Hancock County Food Pantry.

Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen service opportunities

The Hancock County Young Republicans and the Hancock County Republican Women are continuing our efforts to partner together to volunteer at the Kenneth Butler Memorial Soup Kitchen on Main Street in Greenfield.

Our next two dates to prepare and serve the evening meal at the Soup Kitchen will be on Tuesday, August 31st and Tuesday, September 28th. We need 6 volunteers to help prepare the meal to work from 2:30pm-4:30pm and then 8 volunteers to help serve the meal and clean-up to work from 4:30pm to 7pm.

We still need one volunteeer for each shift on the August 31st service date, but would like to start arranging volunteers for the September 28th service date as well.

Hancock YR August Meeting with Congressman Dan Burton

Please join us as we welcome our featured speaker, our Fifth District Congressman, Dan Burton for our Hancock County Young Republicans meeting on Tuesday, August 3rd, at 7pm, in the Commissioners Court at the Hancock County Courthouse Annex.

Congressman Burton is currently serving his fourteenth term as a United States Representative from Indiana's Fifth Congressional District. His first term in Congress began in January of 1983.... The Fifth District lies in the heart of central Indiana and includes all of Tipton, Grant, Miami, Wabash, Huntington, Hamilton, and Hancock Counties, as well as parts of Marion, Shelby, Howard and Johnson Counties.

When Congressman Burton assumed the Chairmanship of the House Committee on Oversight & Government Reform in the 105th Congress, he became the first Hoosier Republican to Chair a full House Committee in more than sixty years. The last was Congressman William Robert Wood, who chaired the Committee on Appropriations during the 71st Congress (1929‐1931). Congressman Burton currently serves as Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia. Also, he is a Senior Member on the Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

November YR Meeting with Dennis Maloy and Officer Elections

With the economy on everyone's mind (as well as constantly in the news) November seems to be a great month to talk about what's going on locally in Hancock County when it comes to economic development! To that end, I'm pleased to announce that Executive Director of the Hancock Economic Development Council Dennis Maloy will be talking to our group on Tuesday November 10th at 7:00pm at the Commissioners Court at the County Annex in Greenfield.

The Hancock Economic Development Council provides site location assistance, cost of doing business analysis, and economic impact modeling to site location consultants, the corporate real estate community, and individual businesses. They also serve as a liaison between local government and the business community. Right now, there seems to be a lot of growth going on in Hancock County and Dennis can tell us how that came about as well as possibly tell us about future projects.

So here are the details:

When: Tuesday, November 10th, 2009 at 7:00pm
Where: Commissioners Court at the Hancock County Government Center in Greenfield

This will also be our last formal meeting of the year so we will be conducting YR Officer elections for the 2010 Hancock YR calendar year. Article IV Section 1 states "All officers’ terms shall last for one year, beginning on January 1st of each year". To that end, we'll be holding elections for the upcoming year at our November 10th meeting. The initial proposed slate of officers for 2009 includes:

Josh Gillespie, candidate for Vice Chairman
Tony Denger, candidate for Treasurer
Amy Ott, candidate for Secretary

If you are an active member of Hancock County's Young Republican organization and in good standing, you are eligible to vote in this election. Individuals who are active members and in good standing may also be a candidate for one of the aforementioned positions. To express your interest in a postion or to nominate someone for a position, notify Trisha Holiday (current secretary of YR) at tsholliday1@netzero.com. Nominations will also be accepted from the floor.

Voting in all contested races shall be by secret ballot. No proxies shall be allowed. Fifty percent plus one of the votes cast shall constitute a majority for election. If a majority is not obtained on the first ballot, the two candidates receiving the most votes will be the candidates in a runoff election. Only active members are eligible to vote.

Join the Hancock YR's at For Mini-Golf at That Fun Place!

We are having a mini-golf night at That Fun Place in Greenfield! This isn't going to be any ordinary mini-golf. This will be indoor black light mini-golf! Our event will take place Thursday, October 29th from 5:00-8:00pm. The cost will be $10 per person. That will cover the mini-golf, buffet and drink. Also, a portion of the $10 will also go the Hancock County Young Republicans.

This will be a fun event for everyone and we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible!

Upcoming YR Meeting (Note Rescheduled Date) and Riley Days Sign Up Form

Greetings Fellow YR's,

We came across a bit of a scheduling problem with out next meeting. It was originally scheduled for Tuesday August 29th, but State Senator Beverly Gard and State Representative Bob Cherry are holding Property Tax Forum at the Hancock County Public Library in Greenfield the same night (and also at 7:00pm). So we are moving our meeting to the following Tuesday, October 6th at 7:00pm at the Commissioners Court at the County Government Annex.

Unfortunately, our original guest speaker, Dennis Maloy, is unable to make the new date (he will now be headlining our November meeting). Instead, we will be having Hamilton County GOP Chairman and Republican candidate for Secretary of State, Charlie White! We are very excited to be able to have Charlie come speak to our group.

Charlie, who resides in Fishers with his son William, currently is serving his third term as town councilor for the Town of Fishers. In that role on the Fishers Town Council, he has tackled areas such as economic development, public safety, road improvements and parks development as Fishers’ population has nearly doubled to just over 68,000 residents in the last 10 years. Fishers, which is Northeast of Indianapolis and located in Hamilton County, has been named the 10th best place to raise a family in the United States by Money Magazine in 2008 and 11th best place to relocate in the United States by Forbes Magazine in 2009.

Charlie has been a practicing attorney in the public and private sector for over 14 years and graduated from Wabash College in 1992 followed by his law degree from Valparaiso School of Law in 1995.

After a busy July that saw the Hancock County Fair and 4-H parade, the National YR Convention in Indy and our annual Hancock YR Family picnic, we're ready to get back in the saddle for our monthly meetings. Our August meeting will be Monday August 17th at 7:00pm (Dr. Brian Kirkwood's (5396 N. Fortville Pike, Greenfield).

With Federal elections heating up all across the state our featured guest speaker this month will be former Republican State Rep. from northwest Indiana and potential United States Senate candidate Dan Dumezich. Mr. Dumezich is traveling across Indiana meeting with everyday Hoosiers hearing what we have to say about the leadership in Washington.

YR Picnic Still On Despite the Rain

Greetings Fellow YR's,

Some of you may be wondering if we'll still be having the picnic this afternoon since it's been raining. The answer is YES! We've talked with Jerry Bell and Nameless Creek Youth Camp and we are confident that the picnic can still go on especially since the picnic area is a covered and the food has been ordered. Plus the grounds have been inspected and the camp didn't get to hard by the rain.

We hope you will come out and join us this afternoon at 5:00pm at Nameless Creek Youth Camp ( located at 2675 South 600 East approximately 4 miles southeast of Greenfield, IN and just southeast of the intersection of County Road 600 E and 250 S) for fun, food and games! Anybody up for some horseshoes, badminton, volleyball or rope golf?

Upcoming YR Family Picnic

We're quickly approaching the upcoming Hancock YR Family Picnic on Saturday July 25 at 5:00! It's going to be a blast as we'll be at the Nameless Creek Youth Camp located at 2675 South 600 East (approximately 4 miles southeast of Greenfield, IN and just southeast of the intersection of County Road 600 E and 250 S). In addition to great food, we'll be able to play games such as softball or volleyball, plus we'll be able to walk the trails! It's going to be a great time of relaxing and having fun with fellow YR's.

We'll be supplying chicken/chicken fingers as well as paper goods and drinks. But we're asking if you could help us out by bringing a side item and/or a dessert.

Have we got a meeting for you this month! I am pleased to announce that on Monday, June 29th at 7:00pm State Treasurer Richard Mourdock will be our guest speaker!

As I'm sure you all know, Secretary Mourdock has been especially busy lately in filing his objection to the Chrysler bankruptcy. This garnered him national attention and support from conservatives all across the country. This should be a very interesting meeting as he explains what led him to that decision and the aftermath of his filing.

May is an exciting month with Indy 500 festivities and action with the Hancock YR's is no different! We are having our next monthly meeting Monday, May 18th at Commissioners Court at the Hancock County Government Annex in Greenfield. Just as we got a mid-session update from State Rep. Bob Cherry and local radio personality Abdul Hakim-Shabazz we will get a session wrap-up, plus a special session preview from those in the know. Will we have a budget? Will any potential CIB bailout have an effect on Hancock County? What exactly will take place in a special session? Senator Gard and Matt Tully will answer all our questions.

By now, you’re probably noticing the count down clock up above on several conservative blogs all across the state. It’s the very same clock the Indiana House Republicans are using against Pat Bauer and House Democrats on their insistence to deny property tax payers permanent relief. Does that surprise you? This is the same group that decided to pass, in a partisan vote, a one year budget proposal that was devoid of funding for education and child welfare, typically seen as Democrat issues. They also kicked township consolidation to the curb, because we all know that townships have been brilliant with taxpayer money over the years.

But there is one thing left Bauer and his merry Democrats could do, especially in these turbulent economic times. And that’s push for final passage of the Constitutional Amendment to cap property taxes. Remember when Bauer wouldn’t let anything else be discussed last year because property taxes were the issue du jour? Well, now it’s the economy and property taxes are directly tied into the economy.

We have a great meeting lined up for this month! Our guest is going to be WXNT's own Abdul Hakim-Shabazz, who hosts "Abdul in the Morning". We all know that the general assembly has been the hot topic of the year so far, from government consolidation, to property tax caps, to the Democrats foolishly trying to push through a one year budget instead of the traditional two year budget in tough fiscal times. Anyway you cut it, Abdul has been at the State House to cover it all and has the inside scoop on what's going on.

This after Democrats promised a 48 hour window and Obama promised a five day window to allow Americans to read what was in the bill.

Today, the Republican National Committee voted for it’s first African-Amerian Chairman in former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele. In a vote that was close all day, Steele finally came out victorious after the sixth ballot by a total of 91-77 over South Carolina GOP Chairman Katon Dawson after former Michigan GOP Chairman Saul Anuzis dropped out.

While there have been concerns among the base about Steele’s conservative credentials, Steele closed his acceptance speech by saying the GOP “..will stay the conservative party in America”.

Steele has a tough battle ahead of him by taking over a party that has lost the House, the Senate and the White House in the last two years. He will have to state a clear vision for our party and be able to tackle a popular president and his very liberal agenda.

So congrats to Michael Steele! He’s got a lot of work to do.

Tuesday's Meeting Postponed

Legislative Preview and Election of Officers

Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday December 16th, 7:00 at "The Barn" at Dr. Kirkwood's residence (5396 N. Fortville Pike, Greenfield). Our guest speakers will be State Senator Beverly Gard and State Rep. Bob Cherry. They will be giving us a legislative preview of the upcoming General Assembly.

We will also be conducting the election of officers for the upcoming two year term. Our bylaws require us to hold elections on odd numbered years to elect officers for two year cycles. Since we started our group this year our current officers were only asked to serve a half of a term.

The initial proposed slate of officers for 2009 includes:

Brandee Bastin, candidate for Vice Chairman
Tony Denger, candidate for Treasurer
Libby Manship, candidate for Secretary

Secretary of State Todd Rokita to Address YR's

Ladies and gentlemen, with all the talk of ACORN, fraudulent voter registrations and record numbers of real registrations, this coming Election Day could be the most electric, the most fascinating event this nation has seen in years. And in Indiana, it will be no different.

In Indiana alone, over 500,000 new voters have registered. And with the head-scratching shenanigans up in Lake County, the Secretary of State's office has been in overdrive. Two New Polling Locations

As I mentioned at the last YR meeting, there are two polling locations have changed for the general election. They are:

Precinct G-4, formerly at Weston School (140 Polk St., Greenfield) will now be located at St. Michael's Parrish Life Center, 519 Jefferson Boulevard, Greenfield.

Precint V-2, formerly at Mt. Vernon High School (8112 North 200 West Fortville) will now be located at Mt. Vernon Intermediate School, 8414 North 200 West, Fortville.

Changes have been made due to construction on the normal polling locations.

Young Republicans Choose New Leader

The Hancock County Young Republicans have installed new leaders for the rest of the year. The group, which met Saturday, elected Libby Manship Chair for the term ending on December 31, 2008. Brandee Bastin was elected Vice Chair and Joshua Gillespie was elected Secretary. John Graves continues as Treasurer.

These elections follow the election of the group's former Chair, Michael Griffin, as Chairman of the Hancock County Republican Party. He resigned his post with the Young Republicans to take that job.

What's Been Going on With the County Party?

County Chairman Michael Griffin just sent out an email update with what's been going on with the party since he ascended to the chairmanship. Here's a look:

We have been working on many fronts over the past weeks. Much of this has been organizational, behind-the-scenes work, and we thought you might appreciate a brief report about what we have been doing.

* Establishing a county party web site with a goal of being online by early next week.

* Developing a regular newsletter that will begin publication late this month.

* Identifying people who will serve in various roles in support of the county party, as Event Coordinators for various festivals and events, and as County Coordinators for statewide campaigns.

* Developing a training program for Precinct and Vice Committeemen, communicating needs and expectations under our new leadership.

* Recruiting volunteers and making arrangements for the 4-H Fair booth.

* Arrangements for the Fair parade on July 13.

* Preparations for our Campaign School on Saturday, July 26.

* Developing a comprehensive fundraising strategy.

* Developing an events calendar for the remainder of 2008.

If you have interest in participating in a new role for the county party or in other ways, please let me know soon. The iron is hot, strike now.

Represent the Republican Party at the Hancock 4-H Fair Booth, July 11-18

Please let County Chairman Griffin know the dates and times you are available to represent our party at the Hancock County 4-H Fair. Duties will include smiling, shaking hands, registering voters and signing up folks to volunteer in the coming months. From Friday, July 11 through Friday, July 18, we will staff the booth in shifts of 4-6pm, 6-8pm and 8-10pm.

This request is for those who are NOT candidates. Candidates will be there, of course, but they will be busy greeting everyone they meet. We need folks to stand with the candidates and "work" the booth. This can actually be a lot of fun, not work, and it is a great opportunity to spend time with your fellow Republicans.

If you are not a candidate during the current election cycle, please reply no later than Monday, July 7. Volunteers will receive more detailed information soon. Draftees will receive a phone call from Chairman Griffin. Candidates and County Coordinators will receive a separate e-mail message from me during the coming week.

Save the Date - Hancock County Republican Campaign School

The Hancock County Republican Party will host a Campaign School on Saturday, July 26, 8:30am to 4:30pm, in the Commissioner’s Court at the Hancock County Courthouse Annex, 111 American Legion Place, Greenfield.

All Republicans are welcome and encouraged to attend. We believe supporters, future candidates and current candidates will all find this training to be beneficial and fun! A working lunch will be provided. There will be a nominal, per person cost to attend (no more than $20). Funds will be used to pay for copying the written materials, lunch, and costs for the consultant facilitating the training. We are soliciting sponsorships. Sponsor recognition will be made in a flyer that we will distribute during the week of July 7. If you are interested in sponsoring this training, please let me know as soon as possible but no later than July 3.

We know that a number of you have valuable campaign experience. This training can offer you new ideas and help you move into a "campaign" frame of mind as we enter the fall campaign season. If you might want to run for office at some point in the future, this training can help you plan how to conduct your future campaign. If you have not been involved in a campaign, this training can give you the tools you need to best support your candidates this fall.

Mike served as Indiana Republican State Chairman from 1995 to 2002.

We would like to congratulate Michael Griffin on becoming our new Hancock County Republican Chairman! Michael helped re-establish the Hancock County YR's earlier this year becoming our county YR Chairman. We wish Michael well in all his endeavours as our new county GOP Chairman.

By assuming that role, Michael did have to step down as YR Chair. Libby Manship has stepped up to take on the role of new YR Chair for the Hancock County Group.
